This creamy Swiss chard gratin is a rustic yet indulgent dish, blending tender greens with rich custard and golden melted cheese. A perfect family meal that balances earthy flavors with velvety textures.
Ingredients
1–2 bunches Swiss chard
200 ml heavy cream
100 g Comté or Gruyère cheese, cubed
50 g grated cheese (e.g., Parmesan)
1 garlic clove, minced (optional)
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
Instructions
Wash Swiss chard thoroughly and separate stems from leaves
Cut stems into 1-2 cm pieces and coarsely chop leaves
Boil stems in salted water for 10 minutes, add leaves and cook 5 minutes
Drain and squeeze out excess liquid in a colander
Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F)
Sauté garlic in olive oil in a skillet
Mix boiled chard, cream, cubed cheese, and sautéed garlic
Season with salt and pepper
Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish
Top with grated cheese and bake 30-40 minutes, or until golden and bubbly
Notes
For best results, use fresh Swiss chard
Ensure leaves are fully drained to prevent soggy gratin
Add a pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth (optional)
Serve warm with a simple green salad or crusty bread
