Description

A creamy French potato gratin with a golden crispy crust, made with fresh cream, garlic, and fromage. Perfect as a comforting side dish or main, ideal for family gatherings.


Ingredients

Pommes de terre: 1 kg (about 10 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced)
Crème fraîche: 500 ml
Lait entier: 200 ml (optional, for lighter consistency)
Fromage râpé (Comté or Gruyère): 100 g
Ail: 1 to 2 cloves
Noix de muscade: A pinch
Sel: To taste
Poivre noir (frais moulu): To taste
Beurre: A small amount (for greasing the dish)


Instructions

Preheat oven to 180°C (Thermostat 6)
Peel, wash, and dry potatoes thoroughly. Slice thinly to 2-3 mm thickness
Rub the inside of a casserole dish with a halved garlic clove and grease with butter
Layer sliced potatoes in the dish, overlapping slightly
In a bowl, mix crème fraîche, milk (if using), grated garlic, and a pinch of nutmeg. Season with salt and pepper
Pour the cream mixture over the potatoes until fully covered
Sprinkle grated cheese on top
Bake for 60 minutes until golden and bubbling
Let rest for 10 minutes before serving

Notes

Use a mandoline for uniform slices and careful handling
do not overfill the dish to avoid a runny center
Milk can reduce saturated fat without compromising texture
garnish with fresh thyme or chives before serving
