Description

A classic French comfort dish featuring tender potatoes, rich creamy sauce, and golden cheese. Simple and indulgent, it’s perfect for family meals or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

45 medium potatoes (1 kg)
2 cups heavy cream (400 ml)
1 cup whole milk (200 ml)
2 cloves garlic
3.5 oz grated cheese (Comté, Gruyère, or Emmental)
1 1/2 tablespoons butter
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
Melt 1 1/2 tbsp butter in a 9×13″ baking dish
Peel and thinly slice potatoes (1/8″ thick)
Layer sliced potatoes in the dish, slightly overlapping
In a bowl, mix cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg
Pour liquid over potatoes to cover
Sprinkle grated cheese on top
Bake for 50-60 minutes until bubbling and golden brown
Let rest 10 minutes before serving

Notes

Use starchy potatoes like Charlotte for best results
Optional: add 1 tbsp flour if liquid is too loose
Freeze un-baked gratin, covered, for up to 2 months
